Speaker Profile

I focus on two strange aspects of tides around the UK. First, UK tides are very big compared to what you might expect elsewhere in the world, or compared to basic theory. I explain why tides are so big, and also an important consequence for the animals that live in UK seas. Second, where the UK seas meet the open NE Atlantic we find a strange underwater tidal wave that is associated with lots of plankton growth and, ultimately, one of the most heavily fished parts of UK seas. I explain how this wave is generated, and how it affects the biology from plankton to fish.
