Speaker Profile
TEDxLSE talk about the microbiota or "microbiome" (the microorganisms that live in and on us) and their role in human health. I explained why we have evolved to require these microbial partners (which are more numerous than our own cells). Then I outlined their roles in human health, particularly in the immune system, metabolism and brain development. Finally I explained why we no longer encounter enough microorganisms, and why this leaves us more susceptible to chronic inflammatory disorders (allergies, autoimmune disease) and to several psychiatric disorders.
