Is it a bat? Is it a snake? It is a pangolin?? More importantly, how do we know? The novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is an ongoing public health emergency with global outbreak size totalling over half a million cases of COVID-19 disease as of the end of March. Investigations have taken place upon an unprecedented stage of open science and sequencing advances - meaning genetic clues to the virus’ origin have been discovered more quickly than ever before.

This short talk discusses where new viruses come from, reviews evidence surrounding the source of SARS-CoV-2, and looks at how information spread during the early epidemic, including some unsubstantiated claims.
